The ReCycle Bikes Alternative Education Programme successfully re-engages young people with the learning process through bicycle mechanics, bringing unwanted and discarded bicycles back to life and keeping them out of the waste stream. We work with 14-16 year-old children who, for a number of reasons, are not achieving in mainstream education and are at risk of disengaging with the schools system.
The young people learn about bicycle mechanics in a designated teaching space within a fully-functioning bike mechanics’ workshop. The programme is a mix of theoretical and ‘hands-on’ learning, designed to improve the self esteem and self confidence of our learners while simultaneously preparing them for the world of work. Our young people gain the opportunity to learn alongside fully-qualified mechanics and experience how a ‘real-life’ bicycle mechanics workshop operates.
